Koh Phangan Island
Koh Phangan Island is situated in the Southern Thai Province of Suratthani, a short boat ride from the mainland takes you past the famous Ang Thong National Marine Park and sister island of Koh Samui to one of the last unspoiled paradise islands, Koh Phangan.
With only 1 major road that goes around 3/4 of the island, there are plenty of hidden beaches and mountain treks you can still enjoy without the hustle and bustle of the other main thai tourist islands. The island is famed for the monthly full moon parties but there is a lot more to Koh Phangan Island and below are some interesting activities and places to visit.
Amazing Dive Sites
There are many activities & tours available on Koh Phangan including some of the best snorkelling & diving in Thailand. With well know diving sites like Sail Rock & Koh Tao only a short boat trip away there is something for everyone.
Angthong Marine Park
You can also make a day trip or Stay overnight at the Ang Thong National Marine Park Islands which was the original setting for the Book – The Beach by Alex Garland which was later made famous by the movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
There are many Island Tours available that can include elephant trekking, monkey and crocodile shows, snorkeling & visiting the major beaches, temples and waterfalls to name a few.
There are many different travel options to choose from to get to Koh Phangan Island, If you’re looking to see a little bit of Thailand on your way to the Island, the bus and boat options are best for you and very cheap at around 1200 bht per person.
With flights starting at around 1,500 bht one way there is something for everyone’s budget. Bookings are best made online, below are some further details on each option with web links to companies we advise you to use.
There are daily flight from most major airports to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, you can book online with many of the major airlines including BA, Qantas and the national carrier Thai Airways. There are also cheap options for flights to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia with Air Asia with direct flights to many thai cities from there. Prices are best in low season around the end of March and the start of April.
By Air To The Islands
Daily Flights fly from Suvarnabhumi Airport Bangkok direct to either Koh Samui Airport, Suratthani Airport or Nakhon Srithammarat Airport.
Samui Airport: You need to book with Bangkok Airways, best to book 3-4 weeks in advance for best prices. Short 30 Minute Boat Ride to Koh Phangan Island.
Suratthani Airport: Bookings Online with AirAsia or Nok Air + 3-4 Hour Bus and Boat Journey to the islands.
Nakhon Srithammarat Airport:Bookings Online with AirAsia + 3-4 Hour Bus and Boat Journey to the islands.
By Train & Boat
You can book the overnight strain from Bangkok’s central station to Suratthani Station on the southern line with State Railway of Thailand – www.railway.co.th. Best to book either a private air con cabin or a sleeper seat. Trains depart around 7pm at night and arrive in the early morning. Outside the station are many tours and companies that will take you to either Suratthani or Donsak for the onward boat ride to the islands. From Suratthani Station its a 3-4 hour Bus & Boat Ride to The Islands.
By Bus & Boat To Koh Phangan
There are 2 main companies in the Koh San Road area that have daily services to Koh Phangan Island, Lomprayah or Seatran Discovery leave either at night around 9pm, arriving 11am on Koh Phangan and a morning service from 6am arriving on Koh Phangan around 5:30pm.
You take the bus from the Koh San Road area and travel from Bangkok to Chumpon before making the boat ride to Koh Toa and then onto Koh Phangan Island, this is a good way to see some of the thai country side and also the amazing views of Koh Toa and the surrounding islands.
